Also known as physical metallurgy, it is a science about metals and alloy. Its main content is to study the phase structure, the essence of macro and micro structures, the formation and change rules, and the relationship with chemical composition and properties of metals and alloy. It is gradually developed on the basis of the original metallography and in combination with physical chemistry, materials mechanics, thermodynamics, crystallography, electronic theory and other disciplines. It rose in the 1930s, from experience to theory, from qualitative to quantitative, and is still in continuous improvement and development. At the same time, some contents have the tendency to differentiate into independent disciplines, such as metal solidification, solid phase transformation of metals and alloy, fractography crystal defect and strengthening theory have been initially established.
