The movement of edge dislocation in the direction perpendicular to the slip direction. For a positive edge dislocation, when the atom jumps from the edge of more than half atomic plane to the lattice gap position or the vacancy near the dislocation, the dislocation can climb upward. Conversely, if the interstitial atoms diffusion to the dislocation line, or the atoms on the lattice position next to the dislocation enter the redundant half atomic plane, the dislocation will climb downward. Generally, the climbing of dislocation cannot make the dislocation line move as a whole.
