A carbonate mineral with a simple island like structure. The chemical formula is Ca [CO3], and strontium, lead, zinc, and rare earth often replace calcium, forming varieties of strontium aragonite, lead aragonite, and rare earth aragonite. Produced in modern hot springs, geysers, weathering crusts of ultrabasic rocks, oxidation zones of sulfide deposits, caves in limestone, basalt fractures, and modern marine sediments. It is also the main ingredient of animal shells and pearl.
