Scientific name cellulose nitrate, code NC. The product of esterification reaction of cellulose with nitric acid. It is often obtained by esterification of cotton fiber, commonly known as nitrocellulose. It is a poor conductor of electricity and insoluble in water. It is soluble in acetone, ethyl acetate, phthalates, alcohol ether mixed solvents and nitrate to varying degrees according to the nitrogen content. Very sensitive to friction, heat, and flames, easily causing ignition. detonation can be caused by impact, detonator explosion, bullet penetration, etc. Its sensitivity depends on the water content. The slow decomposition of drying can cause spontaneous combustion with a moisture content of 25% to 30%, which can be safely stored and transported. After cellulose is esterified with mixed acid of nitrate and sulfur, it is subjected to stabilization treatment such as acid boiling, alkali boiling, fine breaking and fine washing to remove residual acid and unstable impurities. It is an important raw material for manufacturing various propellant. It is also used to manufacture gum explosive, nitrocellulose paint, celluloid, etc.
