The reactor uses nuclear purity. It has excellent nuclear properties: its thermal neutron capture cross section is 9.5mb, the moderation ratio is 180, and the thermal conductivity is good. It is an excellent moderator and reflector materials. Beryllium reacts with neutrons (n, 2n), and it is a neutron-multiplier materials. Its melting point is (2820 ± 100) K, and its heat of formation is 608kJ/mol at 298K. It has good chemical stability, so it may be used at a higher temperature than beryllium. Its high price, toxicity and irradiation swelling limit its application in reactors.
