It has good toughness and can be rolled up into thin flakes with a small knife. When scratching with a nail, the scratches are dark brown. When burning with a match, it can smoke and contain pitch oil gas. It can extract petroleum, as well as hundreds of by-products such as ammonium sulfate, lubricating oil, and paraffin. Mainly composed of low-level biological remains and clay materials buried in closed bays or lakes, and formed into sapropel through bacterial action under anaerobic reduction conditions. It is formed by causing the sapropel to lose its moisture under a certain hydrostatic pressure. China is widely distributed, but concentrated in Fushun, Liaoning, Huadian, Jilin, Maoming, Hexi Corridor, and northern Shaanxi.
